OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set for fades
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm

The best clipper for fades is one whose blade you can open and close smoothly, so you can blend between lengths without a hard line. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer. We make it, so read its entry with that in mind. It is our pick because a fade needs two tools, a clipper with a taper lever for the blend and a trimmer for the edges, and this set puts both in one box.
If you want a single fading clipper, the Wahl Magic Clip is The Strategist's best overall and lists at $144.99. The Andis reVITE pairs an adjustable fade blade with 12 combs, and the Andis enVISION and Wahl Cordless Color Pro are the lower-cost ways into home fades. For experienced cutters, the BaBylissPRO LithiumFX and the Andis Master Cordless are the premium picks.
Below: what a fade actually asks of a clipper, all seven picks with who each suits and who should skip it, one table comparing every spec, and a second showing where the big guides agree.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set for fades: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A brushless clipper with a taper lever, a detail trimmer for the edges, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.
Best for
- Home fades, where the clipper does the blend and the trimmer does the ear, temple and neckline
- Getting both tools a fade needs in one purchase instead of buying a trimmer later
Skip it if
- You already own a good trimmer and only need a clipper
- You want a corded machine that never needs charging
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for fades for one reason: a fade needs two tools, and this is the only pick on this list that puts a separate detail trimmer in the box with the clipper. The clipper handles the gradient and the trimmer handles the edges, the part of a fade that makes it look finished.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing, with a taper lever for the in-between lengths a fade depends on. With no carbon brushes inside the motor, less of the battery is lost to friction and heat. Both the clipper and the trimmer run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge. Turbo uses more battery.
Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. The honest tradeoff: if you already own a good trimmer, you are paying for a second one. If you fade for clients all day, also look at the premium picks below.

#2
Best for blending fades: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Magic Clip
The Strategist's best overall and Men's Health's most versatile.
Best for
- Blending and fading, with a stagger-tooth blade designed for it
- Cord/cordless use, so a flat battery never ends a fade
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want to spend under $100
The Strategist named the Magic Clip its best hair clipper overall, and Men's Health called it the most versatile. Wahl describes it as a barber-shop staple for fading and blending, and the stagger-tooth blade is why: the staggered teeth pull through hair and soften the line between lengths.
Wahl lists the cord/cordless Magic Clip at $144.99, with a rotary motor, 100 minutes of runtime, a 60 minute charge, 8 guides and a weight of 10.2 oz. It is a clipper only, so the edges need a separate trimmer. Our Magic Clip alternatives guide covers it in more depth.
Also named by The Strategist (New York Magazine): Best hair clipper overall; Men's Health: Most versatile hair clippers. Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#3
Best fade blade with a full guard set: Andis reVITE Cordless Clipper
Forbes Vetted's best overall, with an adjustable fade blade and 12 metal-clip combs.
Best for
- A fade blade plus a complete run of combs, so the top is covered as well as the sides
- Cordless fading with a 2 hour runtime
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer in the same box
- You want the lightest clipper for cutting your own fade
Forbes Vetted chose the reVITE as its best hair clipper overall. For fades, the useful detail is the blade: Andis lists an adjustable stainless-steel fade blade, paired with 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, so one kit covers the short sides and the longer top.
Andis lists it at $149.99, cordless, with a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, a 2 hour runtime and a weight of 11.5 oz. It is on the heavier side for cutting your own fade with an arm raised, and it is a clipper only, so clean edges still need a trimmer.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers overall. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#4
Best budget clipper for home fades: Andis enVISION Cordless Clipper
A 7.7 oz cordless clipper with a blade that adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm, listed at $79.99.
Best for
- Cutting your own fade, where a lighter clipper is easier to hold behind your head
- An adjustable blade range for the in-between lengths
- Several fades between charges: Andis lists up to 3 hours of runtime
Skip it if
- You want a barber-shop fading clipper
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
Andis lists the enVISION at $79.99, with a rotary motor at 7,000 strokes per minute, up to 3 hours of runtime and a titanium-ceramic blade that adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm. That adjustment range is the fade feature: it gives you lengths between guard sizes without a guard change. It comes with 12 attachment combs from 1/16 in to 5/8 in.
At 7.7 oz it is the lightest of the picks whose makers publish a weight, which counts when you are fading your own head in a mirror. The LED display shows battery level and a maintenance reminder. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs. The edges need a separate trimmer.
Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 27, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#5
Best for a first home fade: Wahl Cordless Color Pro Lithium-Ion Hair Clipper
Forbes Vetted's value pick, with a taper lever and 12 color-coded guards.
Best for
- A first attempt at a fade: color-coded guards make it easier to keep track of which length went where
- A taper lever for softening the line between guards
Skip it if
- You want an adjustable fade blade or a barber-style clipper
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
Forbes Vetted named the Cordless Color Pro its best value hair clipper. Wahl lists it at $78.99, cordless, with up to 2 hours of runtime, self-sharpening blades, a taper lever and 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in. A 15-minute quick charge gives 5 minutes of use.
For a first fade, the color coding matters more than it sounds. A fade uses three or four guard lengths in sequence, and matching a color is easier mid-cut than reading a small number on a guard. It is a home clipper, not a fading machine, so the blend relies on the taper lever and some patience. The edges need a separate trimmer.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best value hair clippers. Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#6
Premium pick: precise taper control: BaBylissPRO LithiumFX Cord/Cordless Clipper
A cord/cordless barber clipper with a zero-gap adjustable blade and 5-detent taper control.
Best for
- Experienced cutters who want repeatable settings, from the 5-detent taper control
- Zero-gap adjustment for close skin fades
- Cord/cordless work at a barber station
Skip it if
- You are learning; the zero-gap blade cuts close and is less forgiving
- You want to stay near $100
BaBylissPRO lists the LithiumFX with a zero-gap adjustable tri-blade and 5-detent taper control. The detents are the fade feature: instead of a free lever, the blade clicks into set positions, so you can return to exactly the same length on the other side of the head.
BaBylissPRO lists it at $189.99, cord/cordless, with a ball-bearing DC motor at 6,800 RPM, a 2 hour runtime and 8 combs. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs. It is one of our two premium picks, for people who already fade confidently and want finer control.
Specs from babylisspro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#7
Premium pick: for experienced fade cutters: Andis Master Cordless Clipper
Forbes Vetted's luxury pick and Men's Health's professional pick, sold without guide combs.
Best for
- Barbers and confident home cutters who fade with the blade rather than guards
- An aluminum body and an adjustable blade from 000 to 1
Skip it if
- You rely on guards; Andis includes none, only a blade guard
- You want a light clipper; Andis lists 13.2 oz
Forbes Vetted called the Master Cordless its best luxury hair clipper, and Men's Health named it the best professional clipper. Andis lists an adjustable carbon-steel blade from 000 to 1 in an aluminum body, a rotary motor at 6,500 strokes per minute and a runtime of 1 hour 30 minutes.
Andis lists it at $229.99, and it comes with no guide combs, which tells you who it is for: people who fade by working the blade lever freehand. At 13.2 oz it is the heaviest of the picks whose makers publish a weight. If you are still learning your guard sequence, one of the picks above will be easier to live with.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best luxury hair clippers; Men's Health: Best professional hair clippers. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
What Makes a Clipper Good for Fades?
A fade is a gradient. The hair goes from skin or near skin at the bottom to full length at the top, and the job is to make that change look smooth rather than stepped. Most of that smoothness comes from the space between guard lengths, and that is where the clipper matters.
A #1 guard leaves about 3mm and a #2 leaves about 6mm. Jump straight from one to the other and you get a visible line, the shelf. A good fade clipper lets you cut the in-between lengths with the blade itself, which is why the blade and lever matter more for fades than raw motor speed.

The Taper Lever and an Adjustable Blade
The lever on the side of a fade clipper moves the cutting blade forward and back. Closed, it cuts shortest. Open, it leaves roughly 1mm to 1.5mm more hair. Working the lever between guard sizes is how barbers split a #1 into a #1 and a half without changing guards.
For fades, look for a lever that moves smoothly and holds its position, not one that snaps between two settings. Some professional clippers use a dial or detents instead of a free lever. Either works, as long as you can find the same setting twice.

Zero-Gap and Blade Type
Zero-gapping means setting the moving blade almost level with the fixed blade so the clipper cuts very close to skin. It is how many barbers get the bottom of a skin fade without a foil shaver. Some clippers ship set close, some can be adjusted with a screwdriver, and some are made for home use and are not meant to be adjusted at all.
If you are learning, you do not need a zero-gapped clipper. A closed lever plus a trimmer for the very bottom gets a clean low fade with far less risk of nicking the skin.

Guards, Weight and Power
Fades live in the short guards, from 1/16 in up to about 1/2 in. A kit with only a few short guards is fine for fades but limits the longer top. Weight matters more than most people expect: a fade means holding the clipper at an angle, flicking out of the hair, for 20 minutes or more. Cordless is easier to angle around the ear and the back of the head, and a published runtime above about 60 minutes covers a full fade with room to spare.

Why Does a Fade Need a Trimmer Too?
A clipper blade is wide. That is what you want for the gradient, and it is too wide for the details a fade is judged on: the line behind the ear, the temple, the neckline and the very bottom of a skin fade. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for exactly that work.
If you are buying your first fade setup, budget for both, or choose a set that already includes both.

How We Chose
We did not run our own lab test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.
We read four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, and kept the machines they name for fading and blending or whose makers list a fade blade, a taper lever or adjustable taper control. We added one home clipper from Andis's own current range for lower budgets, the enVISION, and our own set. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown in each entry. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in. List prices change and retailers often sell below them, so check the price on the day you buy.
NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published September 2026. Specs and list prices read on each maker's website on the dates shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Bevel Pro All-in-One Clipper and Trimmer. Men's Health named it the best hair clipper for fades, and Forbes Vetted called it the best for design. It is listed here by name and guide picks only, without specs.
- Philips Norelco All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000. Forbes Vetted listed it as its best for fades. Philips sells it as a face, head and body trimmer kit rather than a dedicated hair clipper, so we kept it off the main list. Our best hair clippers guide covers it.
- Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Senior. Men's Health's best overall. Wahl includes 3 guides from 1/16 in to 3/16 in, so its guards cover the short lengths and leave the longer top to other guards.
- BaBylissPRO SilverFX+ All-Metal Lithium Clipper. Wirecutter's upgrade pick, with a brushless motor and a zero-gap adjustable taper blade. BaBylissPRO listed it at $249.99 on September 28, 2026.
Which Fade Clipper Should You Buy?
You fade at home and want the clipper and trimmer together: the NOVAH set, our top pick.
You want The Strategist's best overall clipper: the Wahl Magic Clip.
You want a fade blade and a full set of combs: the Andis reVITE.
You cut your own fade and want something light for less: the Andis enVISION.
It is your first fade: the Wahl Cordless Color Pro.
You already fade well and want finer control: the BaBylissPRO LithiumFX or the Andis Master Cordless.

How Do You Cut a Fade With Any of These?
Start by setting the fade line. Take your chosen bottom length, often the lever closed with no guard or a #1, and cut up to where the fade should start, flicking the clipper outward as you reach the line. Then go one guard longer and cut a band above it, again flicking out. Repeat until you reach the length on top.
Now blend. Go back to each line between two lengths and cut only that line with the lever half open, or with the in-between guard. This is where most of the time goes, and it is the step that turns bands into a gradient. Finish with the trimmer around the ears, the temples and the neckline. Our step-by-step skin fade guide walks through it in detail, and our guide to blending guard lines covers the shelf problem specifically.
Do You Need a Professional Clipper for Fades?
Not to learn, and not for a clean fade at home. What a professional fading clipper adds is finer control and a blade you can zero-gap, and that matters most when you are fading several heads a day and speed counts. At home, the lever, a steady sequence of guards and a trimmer do most of the work.
Where the extra spend does pay off is for people who are going to cut hair for others. If that is you, the premium picks are made for that pace of work.
How Do You Keep a Fade Clipper Cutting Cleanly?
Brush the hair out of the blade after every fade. Put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds, and wipe off the excess. A dry blade runs hot and pulls hair, and on a fade a pulling blade shows up as patchy lines at the bottom.
Check the lever too. Hair packs in behind the blade and makes the lever stiff, which makes the in-between lengths harder to hit. Remove the blade and brush out the housing every few cuts.

What are the best clippers for fades?
It depends on the job. For home fades with a clipper and trimmer in one box, our pick is the NOVAH set (we make it). For The Strategist's best overall clipper, the Wahl Magic Clip. For a fade blade with a full comb set, the Andis reVITE. For a light, lower-cost clipper, the Andis enVISION. For precise taper control, the BaBylissPRO LithiumFX.
Is Wahl or Andis better for fades?
Neither wins outright. Both make machines built for fading. On this list, Wahl's Magic Clip is the blending staple and its Color Pro is the easiest first kit, while Andis's reVITE carries a fade blade with 12 combs and its Master is for freehand fading. Choose by how you cut, not by the badge.
Can you do a fade with regular clippers?
Yes. Any clipper with a taper lever and a run of short guards can cut a fade. The technique, cutting in bands and then blending each line, is the same on any machine.
Do you need a trimmer for a fade?
For a clean finish, yes. A clipper blade is too wide for the line behind the ear, the temple and the neckline. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for that detail.
