  • A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
  • 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
  • Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
  • 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm

The best Wahl Magic Clip alternative depends on why you are replacing it. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer. We make it, so read its entry with that in mind. It is our pick because it covers something the Magic Clip does not: it comes as two tools, a brushless clipper for the cut and a trimmer for the edges, each running 5+ hours on standard speed.

If you want a single cordless clipper at a similar price, the Andis reVITE lists at $149.99 and ships with 12 metal-clip combs, and Forbes Vetted named it best overall. On a tighter budget, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro lists at $78.99, and the corded Wahl Elite Pro, Wirecutter's top pick, lists at $69.99. For barbers, the BaBylissPRO LithiumFX and the Andis Master Cordless are the professional step up.

Below: why people look for an alternative, what to check, all six picks with who each one suits and who should skip it, one table comparing every spec, and a second showing where the big guides agree.

OUR TOP PICK

Best clipper + trimmer set: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer

A clipper and a detail trimmer, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.

NOVAH Pro Clipper and Pro Trimmer, matte black cordless set
Runtime5+ hours on standard speed
Guards6 clipper guards
Power: CordlessMotor: Brushless, 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo (clipper)Blade: Clipper with taper lever, plus a detail trimmer

Best for

  • Replacing a Magic Clip and adding a trimmer in the same purchase
  • Cutting your own hair: the clipper takes the length, the trimmer cleans the neckline and around the ears
  • A cordless set that covers fades and lineups for less than several single clippers on this list

Skip it if

  • You specifically want a stagger-tooth blade for blending; the Magic Clip itself is built around one
  • You want a corded machine that never needs charging

We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for this list because it fills the one gap every single clipper here shares: there is no trimmer in the box. Here there is. The clipper does the bulk of the cut and the trimmer does the edges.

The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing, with a taper lever for blending between guard lengths. A brushless motor has no carbon brushes rubbing on the commutator, so less of the battery is lost to friction and heat. Both the clipper and the trimmer run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge, so a full haircut, or several, fits comfortably in one charge. Turbo uses more battery.

Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. The honest limitation: if the stagger-tooth blade is the reason you loved the Magic Clip, keep it; this set blends with a taper lever and guards.

#2

Best single-clipper swap: Andis reVITE Cordless Clipper

Forbes Vetted's best overall, with 12 metal-clip combs in the box.

Runtime2 hours
List price$149.99
Guards12 combs, 1/16 in to 1 in
Power: CordlessMotor: Rotary, 5,500 strokes per minuteBlade: Adjustable stainless-steel fade blade

Best for

  • Someone who wants one cordless clipper at a similar list price to the Magic Clip
  • Home cutters who want a full run of guards, 1/16 in to 1 in, without buying extras
  • Fades, with its adjustable stainless-steel fade blade

Skip it if

  • You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
  • You want the lowest price on this list; two Wahl picks below list for about half

This is the closest like-for-like swap. Forbes Vetted named the reVITE its best hair clipper overall. Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, 2 hours of runtime, an adjustable stainless-steel fade blade and 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, at 11.5 oz. Andis backs it with a 2 year warranty and lists it at $149.99.

The combs are the point. Many clippers at this price ship with a short guard set, and a full run of lengths is what a home cutter actually uses. Wahl lists the Magic Clip with 8 guides, so if more lengths in the box is what you want, this is the one to look at. Like the Magic Clip, it is a clipper only, so the edges still need a separate trimmer.

Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers overall. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#3

Best budget alternative: Wahl Cordless Color Pro Lithium-Ion Hair Clipper

Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards.

RuntimeUp to 2 hours
List price$78.99
Guards12 color-coded guards, 1/16 in to 1 in
Power: CordlessBlade: Self-sharpening blades, taper lever

Best for

  • First-timers: matching guard colors to lengths removes the guesswork
  • Staying with Wahl for a little over half the Magic Clip's list price
  • A cordless clipper with a taper lever for home use

Skip it if

  • You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
  • You want a professional barber machine rather than a home clipper

If the Magic Clip's price is the reason you are looking, this is the obvious move within Wahl. Wahl lists the Cordless Color Pro at $78.99, with up to 2 hours of runtime, self-sharpening blades, a taper lever and 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in. A 15-minute quick charge gives 5 minutes of use, enough to finish a cut if the battery runs low.

The color coding is what earns its place. Matching a color to a length is easier to keep straight mid-cut than reading a small number on a guard. Forbes Vetted made it their value pick. It is a home clipper rather than a barber tool, and Wahl lists a taper lever, so expect to blend with the lever and guards.

Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best value hair clippers. Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#4

Best corded alternative: Wahl Elite Pro Corded High Performance Hair Clipper Kit

Wirecutter's top pick for home haircuts, and the lowest list price here.

List price$69.99
Guards10 guide combs (per Wirecutter)
Power: CordedBlade: Self-sharpening blades

Best for

  • People who never want to charge a clipper
  • A complete corded home haircut kit at $69.99 list

Skip it if

  • You want to cut away from an outlet

Wirecutter chose the Elite Pro as the best clipper for most home haircuts, and Wahl lists it at $69.99, the lowest list price on this list. It is corded, with self-sharpening blades, and Wirecutter reports 10 guide combs in the kit.

Corded is the whole trade. It will never die halfway through a cut, and it will never follow you further than its cord. If the Magic Clip's cord/cordless flexibility was never something you used, this gets you a well-reviewed home kit for less than half the price. Wahl's own page lists fewer specs than the others here, which is why several cells in the table below read not listed.

Also named by Wirecutter (The New York Times): Top pick, the best home hair clipper. Guards from Wirecutter (page updated Mar 28, 2025); other specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#5

Best barber-station alternative: BaBylissPRO LithiumFX Cord/Cordless Clipper

A cord/cordless barber clipper with a zero-gap tri-blade and 8 combs.

Runtime2 hours
List price$189.99
Guards8 combs
Power: Cord/cordlessMotor: Ball-bearing DC motor, 6,800 RPMBlade: Zero-gap adjustable tri-blade, 5-detent taper control

Best for

  • Barbers who want a zero-gap adjustable blade with 5-detent taper control
  • Cord/cordless use with a 2 hour runtime between charges
  • A barber clipper that still ships with 8 combs

Skip it if

  • Budget matters: at $189.99 it lists above the Magic Clip
  • You are new to clippers and do not plan to zero-gap a blade

BaBylissPRO lists the LithiumFX with a ball-bearing DC motor at 6,800 RPM, a 2 hour runtime, a zero-gap adjustable tri-blade with 5-detent taper control, and 8 combs. BaBylissPRO backs it with a 2 year limited warranty and lists it at $189.99.

The detent taper control is what makes it worth considering here. Instead of a smooth lever, the taper clicks through set positions, so you can return to the same blade setting cut after cut. That suits a barber blending all day. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs, not on a guide's endorsement.

Specs from babylisspro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#6

Best for experienced fade cutters: Andis Master Cordless Clipper

A professional fading clipper that ships with no guide combs.

Runtime1 hour 30 minutes
List price$229.99
GuardsNone included (blade guard only)
Power: CordlessMotor: Rotary, 6,500 strokes per minuteBlade: Adjustable carbon-steel blade, 000 to 1

Best for

  • Skin fades and close work with the adjustable carbon-steel blade
  • Barbers and experienced home cutters who already own guards

Skip it if

  • You are new to clippers
  • You need guards in the box: Andis includes none

Men's Health names the Master its best professional hair clipper, and Forbes Vetted named it their luxury pick. Andis lists a rotary motor at 6,500 strokes per minute, a 1 hour 30 minutes runtime, an adjustable carbon-steel blade from 000 to 1, and an aluminum body at 13.2 oz. Andis backs it with a 2 year warranty and lists it at $229.99.

It is built for someone who fades by feel and opens and closes the blade rather than reaching for a guard. There are no guide combs in the box, so a beginner would need to buy them separately before the first cut. As a Magic Clip alternative it makes sense for a working barber, not for a first home kit.

Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best luxury hair clippers; Men's Health: Best professional hair clippers. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper

Why Look Past the Magic Clip at All?

The Magic Clip is a good clipper, and plenty of barbers keep one on the station. The Strategist named it best overall and Men's Health called it the most versatile. Wahl lists the cord/cordless version at $144.99 (checked September 28, 2026) with 8 guides and a 100 minute runtime.

People look for an alternative for four practical reasons. The price is more than a first home clipper needs to cost. It does not include a trimmer, so the neckline and ears need a second purchase. Its stagger-tooth blade is built for blending, which is more tool than a simple buzz cut needs. And some cutters simply want a different blade, a longer runtime, or a corded machine that never needs charging. Knowing which of those is yours narrows the list quickly.

A clipper working through the back of the head, where blade and motor both matter.

Blade: Stagger-Tooth, Fade or Taper

The Magic Clip's stagger-tooth blade has teeth of uneven length. It is designed to soften the line between two guard lengths, which is why fades look blended rather than stepped. If that is what you liked about it, look for a fade blade or a zero-gap adjustable blade on the alternative.

If you mainly cut one length all over, a standard taper blade with a lever is enough, and cheaper. A taper lever opens and closes the blade without changing guards, which covers most of the blending a home cut needs.

Blending the side of a fade: the job the stagger-tooth blade is built for.

Guards Included

Guard count varies more than any other spec on this list, from 12 combs in the box down to none at all. For home cutting, guards matter as much as the motor. A full run of lengths, clear labelling and a firm clip make the difference between an even cut and patches. Professional machines often ship with few or no guards because barbers already own a set.

NOVAH clipper guard sizes: A is 1/16 inch or 1.5mm, 1 is 1/8 inch or 3mm, B is 3/16 inch or 4.5mm, 2 is 1/4 inch or 6mm, 3 is 3/8 inch or 10mm, 4 is 1/2 inch or 13mm

Runtime and Power Source

Cordless is easier to move around a head, especially your own. Check the maker's published runtime and whether the clipper runs while plugged in. A cord/cordless machine gives you both. A corded machine never runs flat mid-cut, which is why some home cutters still prefer one.

Man checking hair length with his hand before cutting
Cutting your own hair is where cordless runtime earns its place.

Do You Also Need a Trimmer?

A clipper removes length. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for the hairline, neckline, sideburns and around the ears. If you replace a Magic Clip with another single clipper, you still need a trimmer for clean edges. That is the gap a clipper and trimmer set closes in one box.

How We Chose

We did not run our own lab test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.

We read four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, and listed the machines they name as picks alongside the Magic Clip. We favored the ones people actually search for, using Google Trends, and mostly the ones in a similar price range to ours, with two premium options for barbers. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown in each entry, except where an entry names a guide as the source. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in.

NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.

What changed: First published September 2026. Other brands' specs were read on September 25, 2026 and their list prices on September 28, 2026, as shown in each entry.

Also Worth Knowing About

  • Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Senior. Men's Health's best overall pick, from Wahl's 5 Star professional line. Wahl lists it at $184.99 (checked September 28, 2026) with 3 guides, so it suits cutters who already own a guard set.
  • BaBylissPRO SilverFX+. Wirecutter's upgrade pick, all-metal and brushless. BaBylissPRO lists it at $249.99 (checked September 28, 2026), above the range of this list.
  • Philips Norelco All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000. Forbes Vetted's pick for fades, but it is an all-in-one face, head and body kit rather than a dedicated clipper, so it is not a direct Magic Clip replacement.
  • Bevel Pro. Forbes Vetted's pick for design and Men's Health's for fades.

Which Magic Clip Alternative Should You Buy?

You want the clipper and the trimmer in one box: the NOVAH set, our top pick.

You want one cordless clipper at about the same price, with more guards: the Andis reVITE.

You want to spend less and stay with Wahl: the Wahl Cordless Color Pro, or the corded Wahl Elite Pro if you never want to charge anything.

You cut hair for a living: the BaBylissPRO LithiumFX for its detent taper control, or the Andis Master if you already own guards and fade by feel.

You loved the stagger-tooth blade: honestly, keep the Magic Clip.

Close side profile of a finished skin fade showing the blend from skin to length
A finished skin fade: the result every pick on this list is chasing.

Is the Wahl Magic Clip Still Worth Buying?

Yes, for the right person. If you already know how to fade and you want a blade built for blending, it is one of the most recommended clippers in the four guides we read: The Strategist named it best overall and Men's Health called it the most versatile.

It is less of a fit if you are buying your first clipper, cutting your own hair, or want the edges handled too. In those cases the price buys a blade you may not use yet, and you still need a trimmer. That is the gap every pick above fills in a different way.

How Do You Look After Any Clipper?

Brush the hair out of the blade after every cut. Put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds, and wipe off the excess. Store it dry, with the blade guard on.

A dry blade runs hot and pulls hair. Before blaming the motor for a clipper that drags, clean and oil the blade, whichever brand you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best alternative to the Wahl Magic Clip?

It depends on why you are replacing it. For a clipper and trimmer in one box, our pick is the NOVAH set (we make it). For a single cordless clipper at a similar price with more guards, look at the Andis reVITE. For a lower price, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro or the corded Wahl Elite Pro.

Is there a cheaper alternative to the Wahl Magic Clip?

Yes. Wahl lists the Magic Clip at $144.99, the Cordless Color Pro at $78.99 and the corded Elite Pro at $69.99 (list prices checked September 28, 2026). The Color Pro and the Elite Pro are both named picks in the big guides, and both are home clippers rather than barber tools.

Do you need a trimmer as well as a Magic Clip?

For clean edges, yes. A clipper blade is too wide for the hairline, neckline and around the ears. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for that detail work. If you only buzz to one length and never touch the edges, a clipper alone is enough.

What makes the Magic Clip good for fades?

Its stagger-tooth blade. The teeth are uneven in length, which softens the line between two guard lengths so a fade looks blended rather than stepped. Other clippers blend with a taper lever or an adjustable fade blade instead.
