OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set for family haircuts
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm

The best clippers for kids' hair are cordless, easy to hold, and come with a full run of guards, so you never have to take a bare blade near a child's scalp. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer, which we make, so read its entry with that in mind.
It is our pick for families because the trimmer handles the fiddly parts of a child's haircut, around the ears and along the neck, that a full-width clipper blade is too wide for. If you want a single clipper for a first-time parent, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro matches guard colors to lengths. The Andis enVISION weighs 7.7 oz, and the Andis inCRED is the lowest list price at $59.99.
Below: all six picks with who each suits and who should skip it, a table comparing every spec, what the big guides agree on, and what to look for when the head in the chair belongs to someone who will not sit still.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set for family haircuts: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.
Best for
- Parents who want neat edges: the trimmer cleans around small ears and the neckline where a clipper blade is too wide
- One kit that cuts the whole family, adults included
- Several haircuts in a row on one charge
Skip it if
- Your child's hair is longer than 1/2 in on top and you want a guard for it: our longest guard is 1/2 in, so longer lengths need scissors
- Low weight is your first priority: we do not list a weight, and the Andis enVISION lists 7.7 oz
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for kids' haircuts for one practical reason: it is two tools. The clipper takes the length off, and the trimmer does the ears and neckline, the part of a child's haircut where a wide blade and a wriggling head do not mix.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM on standard, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing. Both the clipper and the trimmer are cordless and run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge, which is several family haircuts before you need the charger. Turbo uses more battery.
The honest limitation for this list: the guards stop at 1/2 in. If your child wears the top longer than that, you will cut the top with scissors. Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. For comparison, Wahl lists the Magic Clip alone at $144.99.
Check price on AmazonLongest bar = longest published runtime. Makers' own figures, not our tests; corded models and runtimes we could not confirm are left out. NOVAH's is our own figure for standard speed.
#2
Best for first-time parents: Wahl Cordless Color Pro Lithium-Ion Hair Clipper
Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards up to 1 in.
Best for
- A first attempt at home haircuts: matching a color to a length takes the guesswork out mid-cut
- Longer styles on top, with guards up to 1 in
- A cordless clipper with a taper lever at a low list price
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the ears and neckline in the same box
- You cut several heads back to back: Wahl lists up to 2 hours per charge
Wahl lists up to 2 hours of runtime, self-sharpening blades, a taper lever and 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in. A 15-minute quick charge gives 5 minutes of use, enough to finish a haircut if the battery runs low.
The color coding is why it is here. With a child moving in the chair, reaching for the right guard by color is quicker than reading a small number, and the 1 in guard covers the longer tops many kids wear. Forbes Vetted made it their value pick. There is no trimmer in the box, so edges around the ears are done with the clipper's corner or with scissors. Wahl lists it at $78.99.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best value hair clippers. Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#3
Best lightweight cordless clipper: Andis enVISION Cordless Clipper
A 7.7 oz cordless clipper with up to 3 hours of listed runtime.
Best for
- One-handed control while your other hand steadies a small head
- Long sessions: Andis lists up to 3 hours per charge
- A battery and maintenance display, so a flat battery never surprises you mid-cut
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer in the same box
- Your child wears the top longer than 5/8 in and you want a guard for it
Andis lists a rotary motor at 7,000 strokes per minute, up to 3 hours of runtime, a titanium-ceramic blade that adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm, 12 attachment combs from 1/16 in to 5/8 in, and a weight of 7.7 oz. It has an LED display for battery status and maintenance reminders, and Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty.
Weight is the reason it is on a kids' list. Cutting a child's hair often means holding the clipper out at an angle for longer than you expect, and a lighter machine is easier to keep steady. Andis lists it at $79.99.
Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 27, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#4
Best budget clipper kit for kids: Andis inCRED Lithium-Ion Cordless Clipper Kit
The lowest list price here, at $59.99, with a full comb set and cord or cordless use.
Best for
- The smallest spend on a complete home haircut kit
- Cord or cordless use, so a flat battery never ends the haircut
- A light 8.3 oz body
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for detail work in the same box
- You want a barber-grade machine for cutting several heads a day
Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, up to 2 hours of runtime, titanium-coated stainless-steel blades, 10 guide combs from 1/16 in to 1 in plus blending and left and right taper combs, and a weight of 8.3 oz. Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty.
For a parent trying home haircuts for the first time, it covers the lengths most children wear at the lowest list price on this list, and the option to plug it in means a forgotten charge does not end the cut halfway. Andis lists it at $59.99.
Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 28, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#5
Best budget clipper and trimmer kit: Wahl Lithium Pro Cordless Clipper and Battery Trimmer Kit
A cordless clipper plus a battery trimmer, with ear taper combs, at $69.99.
Best for
- Getting a trimmer for the ears in the box at a low list price
- Left and right taper ear combs, which help around a small ear
- A 15 minute quick charge for a clipper you forgot to charge
Skip it if
- You want a matched pair: Wahl lists a lithium-ion clipper and a battery-powered trimmer
- You want a published runtime for the trimmer as well as the clipper
Wahl lists a cordless lithium-ion clipper with 2 hours of runtime, a battery-powered trimmer, self-sharpening blades, a taper lever, guide combs plus left and right taper ear combs, and a 15 minute quick charge. Wahl backs it with a 5 year warranty.
It is the lowest-cost way on this list to get a clipper and a trimmer together, and the ear taper combs are a thoughtful touch for the part of a child's haircut around the ears. The trade is in the trimmer: Wahl lists it as battery-powered, so check how it is powered before you buy. Wahl lists it at $69.99.
Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 27, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#6
Best for older kids who want fades: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Magic Clip
A barber favorite for fades, named best overall by The Strategist and most versatile by Men's Health.
Best for
- Teenagers and older kids who want a blended fade rather than one length all over
- Cord or cordless use from the same machine
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
Wahl lists a rotary motor, a 100 minute runtime from a 60 minute charge, 8 guides and a weight of 10.2 oz. The stagger-tooth blade is designed to soften the line between two lengths, which is what makes a fade look blended rather than stepped.
Most young children only need one or two guard lengths, and this is more tool than that job asks for. It earns its place once a child is old enough to ask for the fade they saw at school. The Strategist named it best overall and Men's Health most versatile. Wahl lists it at $144.99.
Also named by The Strategist (New York Magazine): Best hair clipper overall; Men's Health: Most versatile hair clippers. Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
Guards Matter More Than Motor Power
For a child's haircut, the guard set is the most important part of the kit. A guard holds the blade a set distance from the scalp, so the length stays even. Most children's cuts sit between a 2 (1/4 in, about 6mm) on the sides and a 4 (1/2 in, about 13mm) or longer on top.
Look for a set that runs from at least 1/16 in to 1/2 in, guards that clip on firmly, and clear labels. A guard that flexes or slips off mid-cut is a common cause of an accidental bald patch at home.

Cordless, Because Children Move
A child turns to look at the television, reaches for a toy, or climbs off the chair. A cord gets caught on an arm or pulls the clipper at the wrong moment. Cordless is the single most useful feature for cutting a child's hair, and it lets you work from any side without walking around a cable.
Check the published runtime too. Every pick here lists at least 100 minutes, but a battery that dies halfway through a haircut on a restless four-year-old is a bad afternoon.
Weight and Grip
Cutting a child's hair usually means holding the clipper at awkward angles while you steady their head with your other hand. A lighter machine is easier to control one-handed. Makers publish weight less often than other specs, so each entry gives it where the maker does.
Do You Also Need a Trimmer?
A full-width clipper blade is too wide to get cleanly around a small ear or along a short neckline. A trimmer has a narrower blade for exactly those spots. If you only ever buzz your child's hair to one length, a clipper alone is enough. If you want a tidy edge around the ears, you need both, which is why some kits pair them.
How We Chose
We did not run our own test of these machines on children's hair, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.
We read four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, and added home clippers from Wahl and Andis whose makers publish their guard range and runtime. Then we kept the machines that suit a child's haircut: cordless or cord/cordless, a full guard set, and a light body or a trimmer for the ears. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in.
NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published September 2026. Other brands' specs were read between September 25 and 28, 2026 and their list prices on September 28, 2026, as shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Remington Virtually Indestructible Haircut and Beard Trimmer. Wirecutter's pick as the best clipper for cutting your own or a kid's hair.
- Wahl Elite Pro. Wirecutter's top pick for home haircuts and a low list price, left off this list only because it is corded, and a cord is a nuisance with a child who moves.
- Philips Norelco All-in-One Series 9000. Forbes Vetted's pick for fades, a face, head and body kit rather than a dedicated hair clipper.
Which Kids' Clipper Should You Buy?
Short cuts with tidy edges around the ears, and clippers for the adults too: the NOVAH set, our top pick.
Your first home haircut: the Wahl Cordless Color Pro, for its color-coded guards.
A light machine: the Andis enVISION at 7.7 oz.
Lowest spend: the Andis inCRED at $59.99, or the Wahl Lithium Pro kit at $69.99 if you want a trimmer in the box.
An older child who wants a fade: the Wahl Magic Clip.
How Do You Cut a Child's Hair With Clippers Without Tears?
Home haircuts on children often go wrong because of the setup, not the clipper. Five habits help.
Let them meet the clipper first. Hold the clipper yourself, switch it on, and let them see and hear it running from a safe distance before it goes near their head.
Start at the back. The back of the head is the least worrying place for a child, because they cannot see it and it is furthest from the ears. Save the ears for last.
Use a longer guard than you think. Start one size longer than your target, a 4 (1/2 in) if you want a 3 (3/8 in), and go shorter only if you need to. You can always take more off.
Keep it short. A child's patience runs out fast. A tablet or a favorite show buys you time, and two short sessions beat one long battle.
Check the blade temperature. Any blade warms up as it runs. Touch it to the inside of your wrist every few minutes, and give it a break or a drop of clipper oil if it feels warm.
What Guard Length Suits a Child's Haircut?
Most children's clipper cuts use two or three lengths. A classic short boys' cut often runs a 2 (1/4 in, about 6mm) on the sides and back and a 4 (1/2 in, about 13mm) or scissors on top. An all-over buzz for summer is usually a 3 (3/8 in, about 10mm) or a 4. Very short lengths, a 1 (1/8 in, about 3mm) or below, show the scalp and suit older kids who ask for them more than toddlers.
Guard numbers are not identical across brands, so check the length printed on the guard itself, not just the number.
How Do You Keep a Shared Family Clipper Clean?
A clipper that cuts several people in one household needs a little more care than a personal one. Brush the hair out of the blade and guards after every haircut. Put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds and wipe off the excess. Wash the plastic guards in warm, soapy water now and then and dry them fully before you store them.
A clean, oiled blade also runs cooler and pulls less, which matters more on a child than on anyone else in the chair.

What clippers are best for cutting kids' hair?
Look for a cordless clipper with a full guard set from 1/16 in to at least 1/2 in, and a light body you can hold steady. Our top pick is the NOVAH clipper and trimmer set, which we make; the Wahl Cordless Color Pro suits first-time parents, and the Andis enVISION weighs 7.7 oz.
Can you use adult clippers on a child?
Yes. The guards control the length. What changes is the approach: use a guard every time, start with a longer guard than you need, keep the blade oiled so it runs cool, and take extra care around the ears.
What guard number should I use on my son's hair?
A common short cut uses a 2 (1/4 in) on the sides and back and a 4 (1/2 in) or scissors on top. If you are unsure, start one size longer than you think and go shorter only if needed.
How do you cut a toddler's hair with clippers?
Keep it short and calm: hold the clipper yourself and let the toddler see and hear it running from a safe distance first, sit them on a lap or a high chair with a show to watch, start at the back with a long guard, and finish the ears last with a trimmer or scissors. Stop and come back later rather than pushing through a meltdown.
