OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set for home haircuts
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm

The best hair clipper for home use is one that a non-barber can pick up and get an even result with: plenty of guards, a taper lever, enough runtime for a full cut, and a trimmer for the edges. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer. We make it, so read its entry with that in mind. It is our pick because it puts both tools in one box, a brushless clipper for the cut and a trimmer for the neckline and around the ears, each running 5+ hours on standard speed.
If you want a single clipper, Wirecutter's top pick for home haircuts, the corded Wahl Elite Pro, lists at $69.99. For a first cordless clipper, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro lists at $78.99 with 12 color-coded guards. For cutting your own hair, the Andis enVISION weighs 7.7 oz. Forbes Vetted's best overall, the Andis reVITE, ships with 12 metal-clip combs from 1/16 in to 1 in.
Below: what matters at home, all seven picks with who should skip each, a spec table, where the big guides agree, and how to set up a home cut.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set for home haircuts: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A brushless clipper and a detail trimmer, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.
Best for
- Doing the whole haircut at home, edges included: the clipper takes the length, the trimmer cleans the neckline and around the ears
- Cutting for more than one person between charges
Skip it if
- You only ever buzz to one length and never touch the edges; a single clipper is enough
- You want a corded machine that never needs charging
- You want the lowest possible spend on a first clipper
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for home haircuts because it covers the two jobs a home cut needs, length and edges, with two separate tools in one box. The clipper does the bulk of the cut and the trimmer does the neckline, the sideburns and around the ears.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing, with a taper lever for blending between guard lengths. With no carbon brushes rubbing inside the motor, less of the battery is lost to friction and heat. Both the clipper and the trimmer run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge, so a household's haircuts can fit in one charge. Turbo uses more battery.
Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. The honest tradeoff: if you never do edges, you are paying for a trimmer you will not use. Wahl's Lithium Pro kit below is a lower-priced clipper and trimmer pairing if budget comes first.
Check price on AmazonLongest bar = longest published runtime. Makers' own figures, not our tests; corded models and runtimes we could not confirm are left out. NOVAH's is our own figure for standard speed.
#2
Best corded home kit: Wahl Elite Pro Corded High Performance Hair Clipper Kit
Wirecutter's top pick in its guide to hair clippers for home use, listed at $69.99.
Best for
- People who never want to charge a clipper
- A well-reviewed, complete corded home haircut kit at a low list price
Skip it if
- You want to cut away from an outlet, or cut your own hair without a cord in the way
Wirecutter's guide is written for exactly this search, home haircuts, and the Elite Pro is its top pick. Wahl lists it at $69.99. It is corded, with self-sharpening blades, and Wirecutter reports 10 guide combs in the kit.
The cord is the whole trade. It will never die halfway through a cut, and it will never follow you further than the nearest outlet. If you always cut in the same room, that is no hardship, and the money saved over a cordless clipper can go toward a trimmer for the edges. Wahl's own page lists fewer specs than the others here, which is why several cells in the table below read not listed.
Also named by Wirecutter (The New York Times): Top pick, the best home hair clipper. Guards from Wirecutter (page updated Mar 28, 2025); other specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#3
Best for a first home haircut: Wahl Cordless Color Pro Lithium-Ion Hair Clipper
Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in.
Best for
- First-timers: matching a guard color to a length removes the guesswork
- Cutting a family's hair, where each person's lengths can be remembered as colors
- A cordless clipper with a taper lever at a low list price
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want a barber-style clipper rather than a home kit
Forbes Vetted named the Cordless Color Pro its best value hair clipper. Wahl lists it at $78.99, with up to 2 hours of runtime, self-sharpening blades, a taper lever and 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in. A 15-minute quick charge gives 5 minutes of use, enough to finish a cut if the battery runs low.
The color coding is the reason to buy it for home use. Remembering that the sides are always green and the top is always blue is easier than reading a small number on a plastic guard, and it is easier still when you cut several people with different lengths. It is a clipper only, so clean edges need a separate trimmer.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best value hair clippers. Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#4
Best for cutting your own hair: Andis enVISION Cordless Clipper
A 7.7 oz cordless clipper with a runtime of up to 3 hours and 12 attachment combs.
Best for
- Cutting your own hair, where a lighter clipper is easier to hold behind your head
- Several haircuts between charges, with a runtime of up to 3 hours
- Remembering to charge and oil it, with the LED display
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want a corded machine
Andis lists the enVISION with a rotary motor at 7,000 strokes per minute, a runtime of up to 3 hours, a titanium-ceramic blade that adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm, and 12 attachment combs from 1/16 in to 5/8 in. It weighs 7.7 oz, and Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty and lists it at $79.99.
The weight is what earns it this label. Cutting your own hair means holding the clipper overhead and behind you, often for twenty minutes or more, and that is where a few ounces start to count. The LED display shows battery level and a maintenance reminder, which helps a home cutter who might otherwise forget to oil the blade. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs.

#5
Best full guard set: Andis reVITE Cordless Clipper
Forbes Vetted's best overall, shipping with 12 metal-clip combs.
Best for
- Home cutters who want 12 combs, 1/16 in to 1 in, without buying extra guards
- Blending, with its adjustable stainless-steel fade blade
- A 2 hour runtime, enough for more than one haircut
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want to stay near the lower end of this list's prices
Forbes Vetted named the reVITE its best hair clipper overall. Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, a 2 hour runtime, an adjustable stainless-steel fade blade and 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, at 11.5 oz. Andis lists it at $149.99.
For home use, the combs are the point. Metal clips hold a guard onto the blade firmly, and a guard that stays put is what keeps a home cut even. It costs more than the other single clippers here, so it suits someone who cuts often, or for several people, and wants a fading blade as well as a full guard set. It is a clipper only.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers overall. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#6
Best budget clipper + trimmer kit: Wahl Lithium Pro Cordless Clipper and Battery Trimmer Kit
A cordless clipper and a battery-powered trimmer, listed at $69.99.
Best for
- Getting a clipper and a trimmer for the lowest list price on this list
- Home cutters who want taper ear combs for around the ears
Skip it if
- You want a matched pair: Wahl lists a lithium-ion clipper and a battery-powered trimmer
- You want a long runtime; Wahl lists 2 hours for the clipper
Wahl lists the Lithium Pro kit at $69.99, pairing a cordless lithium-ion clipper with a battery-powered trimmer. The clipper has self-sharpening blades and a taper lever, with a 2 hour runtime and a 15 minute quick charge, and the kit includes guide combs plus left and right taper ear combs. Wahl backs it with a 5 year warranty.
If you want a clipper and a trimmer and budget comes first, this is the one to look at. The trade is in the trimmer: Wahl lists it as battery-powered, so check how it is powered before you buy. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs and its price.
Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 27, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#7
Premium pick: for home fades: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Magic Clip
Named best overall by The Strategist and most versatile by Men's Health.
Best for
- Home cutters who already know how to fade and want a barber-shop clipper
- Blending, with its stagger-tooth blade
- Cord/cordless use, so a flat battery never ends a cut
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want a full guard set: Wahl lists 8 guides
Two of the four big guides put the Magic Clip at or near the top: The Strategist named it best overall and Men's Health most versatile. Wahl lists a rotary motor, a 100 minute runtime from a 60 minute charge, and 8 guides in the box, at 10.2 oz, and it runs with or without the cord. Wahl lists it at $144.99.
The stagger-tooth blade is designed to diffuse the line between two lengths, which is what makes a fade look blended rather than stepped. That makes it the pick for a confident home cutter who wants barber-shop fades, and more tool than a first-timer needs. Our Magic Clip alternatives guide covers the machines people compare it with.
Also named by The Strategist (New York Magazine): Best hair clipper overall; Men's Health: Most versatile hair clippers. Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
What Makes a Clipper Good for Home Use?
A home clipper is judged differently from a barber's. A barber cuts many heads a day and needs a motor and blade built for a full shift. A home cutter does a few heads a month, usually their own or a family member's, and has no second chance at a mistake on the back of someone's head.
So the things that matter most at home are the ones that prevent mistakes: a full run of clearly labelled guards, a taper lever that softens the step between two lengths, a clipper light enough to hold at awkward angles, and enough battery that it never slows down halfway through. Raw motor speed matters less than spec sheets suggest, and makers do not all measure it the same way.

Guards
Guards are the single most important feature of a home clipper. They are what turn a sharp blade into a tool that cannot cut shorter than you meant to. Look for a run from 1/16 in to at least 1/2 in, numbers or colors you can read mid-cut, and a firm clip. A guard that flexes against the head leaves uneven patches, and a guard that pops off mid-pass is how home haircuts end with a bald spot.
Guard counts on this list run from a trimmer kit's set to 12 combs. Some professional clippers ship with none at all. If a clipper's guards are thin or few, budget for a better set before the first cut.

Taper Lever
The taper lever on the side of the clipper opens and closes the blade by a fraction of a millimetre. Closed, it cuts at the guard's length. Open, it leaves the hair slightly longer. That small range is what lets a home cutter blend the line between a #2 on the sides and a #3 on top without changing guards every few seconds.
Check each pick's blade entry for a taper lever or an adjustable blade.

Cordless or Corded
Cordless is easier to move around a head, especially your own, where a cord catches on the sink. Check the maker's published runtime: anything above about 60 minutes covers a full home haircut with room to spare.
Corded never runs flat, and it is still the choice of Wirecutter's top home pick. If you always cut in the same spot, a bathroom or a kitchen chair, a cord is no hardship. Cord/cordless machines give you both.

Do You Also Need a Trimmer?
A clipper removes length. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for the hairline, neckline, sideburns and around the ears. The edges are what make a home haircut look like a haircut rather than a buzz, and they are exactly where a wide clipper blade struggles.
If you only ever buzz to one length and let the neckline grow, skip the trimmer. If you want clean edges between barber visits, or instead of them, you need both tools. That is why two of the picks below are sets rather than single clippers.

How We Chose
We did not run our own lab test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.
We read four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, and listed the machines they name as picks. We kept the ones built for home use and favored the ones people actually search for, using Google Trends, mostly in a similar price range to ours, with one premium option for comparison. We added two home machines from Andis's and Wahl's own current ranges that none of the guides covered but that suit this search. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown in each entry, except where an entry names a guide as the source. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in. List prices change and retailers often sell below them, so check the price on the day you buy.
NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published September 2026. Specs and list prices read on each maker's website on the dates shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Remington Virtually Indestructible Haircut and Beard Trimmer. Wirecutter's pick as the best clipper for cutting your own or a kid's hair.
- Andis inCRED Lithium-Ion Cordless Clipper Kit. Andis lists this 18-piece cord/cordless home kit at $59.99 (list price checked September 28, 2026), with 10 guide combs plus blending and taper combs. Our budget clipper guide covers it in full.
- Philips Norelco All-in-One Trimmer Series 9000. Forbes Vetted's pick for fades, a 21-piece kit for face, head and body rather than a dedicated hair clipper. Worth a look if one tool for everything matters more than a taper lever.
- BaBylissPRO SilverFX+. Wirecutter's upgrade pick, an all-metal brushless cord/cordless clipper. BaBylissPRO listed it at $249.99 on September 28, 2026.
Which Home Clipper Should You Buy?
You want to do the whole haircut at home, edges included: the NOVAH set, our top pick.
You never want to charge anything: the corded Wahl Elite Pro, Wirecutter's top home pick.
It is your first clipper, or you cut the whole family: the Wahl Cordless Color Pro, for its color-coded guards.
You mostly cut your own hair: the Andis enVISION, at 7.7 oz.
You want 12 metal-clip combs and a fade blade in the box: the Andis reVITE.
You want a clipper and a trimmer for the least money: the Wahl Lithium Pro kit.
You already fade and want a barber-shop clipper: the Wahl Magic Clip.

How Do You Set Up a Home Haircut So It Goes Right?
Most home haircuts go wrong before the clipper is switched on. Five minutes of setup prevents the two classic mistakes: a guard that was not seated properly, and a first pass that was shorter than intended.
Work in good light with two mirrors. A wall mirror plus a hand mirror shows the back of your own head, and bright light shows missed patches.
Start dry, clean and combed. Clippers cut dry hair more evenly than wet hair, which clumps and hides the true length. Comb the hair in the direction it grows before you start.
Start one guard longer than you think. If you want a #2, make the first pass with a #3. You can always go shorter on a second pass; you cannot put hair back.
Check the guard before every pass. Press it on until it clicks, and look at it. A half-seated guard is a common cause of a bald patch.
Cut against the grain, in short strokes, flicking outward at the end of each so the guard does not dig in.
Do the edges last, with the trimmer. Once the length is even, switch tools for the neckline, around the ears and the sideburns. Our step-by-step guide to cutting your own hair covers each stage in detail.

Is a Home Clipper Worth It Compared With a Barber?
For many people, yes. Every clipper on this list costs less than a few barber visits, and a home clipper used carefully lasts for years. It can also stretch the time between barber visits by keeping the sides and neckline tidy.
The honest limit is skill, not equipment. A home clipper will not give you a barber's eye for shape, and a skin fade takes practice. Many home cutters settle on a middle path: a barber for the shape every few months, a home clipper for simple cuts and touch-ups in between. Our guide to practising haircuts at home is the place to start building the skill.
How Do You Look After a Home Clipper?
Brush the hair out of the blade after every cut. Put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds, and wipe off the excess. Store it dry, with the blade guard on.
A dry blade runs hot and pulls hair, and it is usually the first thing to wear. Before blaming the motor for a clipper that drags, clean and oil the blade, whichever brand you buy. Wash the guards in warm soapy water every few cuts and let them dry fully before storing. For a cordless machine, do not leave the battery fully drained for weeks between cuts; a top-up after each use keeps it healthy.

Check price on AmazonFrequently Asked Questions
What are the best hair clippers for home use?
It depends on who you cut and how. For a clipper and trimmer in one box, our pick is the NOVAH set (we make it). For a corded kit, Wirecutter's top pick, the Wahl Elite Pro. For a first clipper, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro. For cutting your own hair, the Andis enVISION. For 12 metal-clip combs and a fade blade, the Andis reVITE.
What should I look for in a home hair clipper?
A full run of clearly labelled guards, a taper lever, enough runtime for a full haircut if it is cordless, and a weight you can hold comfortably at awkward angles. If you want clean edges, add a trimmer or buy a clipper and trimmer set.
Is Wahl or Andis better for home haircuts?
Neither wins outright. On this list, Wahl's picks are the corded Wirecutter pick, the color-coded first-timer kit, the budget clipper and trimmer kit and the fading clipper, and Andis's picks are the light cordless clipper and the full guard set. Choose by the job, not the badge.
Do I need a trimmer as well as clippers for home haircuts?
For clean edges, yes. A clipper blade is too wide for the hairline, neckline and around the ears. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for that detail. If you only buzz to one length and never touch the edges, a clipper alone is enough.
Can I use the same clipper to cut my whole family's hair?
Yes, as long as the guard set covers the lengths each person wears and you clean the blade and guards between people. Brush out the hair, wipe the guards, and oil the blade at the end of the session.
How long do home hair clippers last?
It depends on care more than price: keep the blade clean and oiled, and replace it when it starts to pull. Check the maker's warranty before you buy, and check that replacement blades are sold for the model you choose.
