The Best Quiet Hair Clippers in 2026

NOVAH makes our top pick and says so in its entry. No other brand paid to appear.

OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set with two speeds
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm

A quiet hair clipper is usually a rotary or brushless machine, run at its lower speed, with a clean and oiled blade. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer, which we make, so read its entry with that in mind.
It is our pick because it pairs a brushless clipper with a detail trimmer and lets you choose between a 6,000 RPM standard speed and a 6,500 RPM turbo, so you only use the extra speed when you choose to. If you want a single rotary clipper, the Wahl Magic Clip is The Strategist's best overall and Men's Health's most versatile pick, and on a budget the Andis inCRED lists at $59.99 and weighs 8.3 oz.
One honest note before the list: we found no decibel rating on the makers' product pages we took specs from, and we have not measured them ourselves. So this list picks by the parts that decide how loud a clipper is: the motor type, the speed you run it at, and how easy it is to keep the blade in good order.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set with two speeds: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A brushless clipper and a detail trimmer, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.
Best for
- Running at a standard 6,000 RPM and switching to 6,500 RPM turbo only when you choose
- Cutting your own hair, edges included: the clipper takes the length and the trimmer cleans the neckline
- Getting two tools for less than several single clippers on this list cost alone
Skip it if
- You need a published decibel figure before you buy: we have not published one
- You only ever buzz to one length and never touch the edges; a single clipper is enough
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick on this list because its clipper pairs a brushless motor with a choice of two speeds, the two features this list looks for.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM on standard, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing. You can keep to the standard speed and use turbo only when you choose to. Both the clipper and the trimmer run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge; turbo uses more battery.
The honest limitation: it is not a silent machine, no clipper is, and we have not measured it with a sound meter, so we do not claim a figure. Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. For comparison, Wahl lists the Magic Clip alone at $144.99.

#2
Best rotary clipper for fades: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Magic Clip
A rotary barber favorite, named best overall by The Strategist and most versatile by Men's Health.
Best for
- Fading and blending with its stagger-tooth blade
- Anyone who wants a rotary motor from a clipper two big guides rank at or near the top
- Cord or cordless use from the same machine
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
Wahl lists a rotary motor, a 100 minute runtime from a 60 minute charge, 8 guides and a weight of 10.2 oz. Rotary is the reason it is here: it is the motor design most associated with a lower hum.
The stagger-tooth blade is built to soften the line between two lengths, which is what makes a fade look blended. The Strategist named it best overall and Men's Health most versatile. It is more tool than a first home haircut needs, and there is no trimmer in the box. Wahl lists it at $144.99.
Also named by The Strategist (New York Magazine): Best hair clipper overall; Men's Health: Most versatile hair clippers. Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#3
Best rotary clipper with a full guard set: Andis reVITE Cordless Clipper
Forbes Vetted's best overall, with 12 combs in the box.
Best for
- A rotary motor plus 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in
- Home cutters who want one clipper that covers short and longer cuts
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer in the same box
- Budget matters more than guard count: two picks below list for far less
Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, a 2 hour runtime, an adjustable stainless-steel fade blade, 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, and a weight of 11.5 oz. Andis backs it with a 2 year warranty.
Forbes Vetted named it their best overall. For a quieter cut it gives you the rotary design and a full run of guards, so you are not forced down to a bare blade to get a length. Andis lists it at $149.99.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers overall. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#4
Best lightweight rotary clipper: Andis enVISION Cordless Clipper
A 7.7 oz rotary clipper with up to 3 hours of listed runtime.
Best for
- Anyone who wants a light machine: Andis lists 7.7 oz
- Long sessions: Andis lists up to 3 hours per charge
- A battery and maintenance display on the body
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer in the same box
- You want guards longer than 5/8 in
Andis lists a rotary motor at 7,000 strokes per minute, up to 3 hours of runtime, a titanium-ceramic blade that adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm, 12 attachment combs from 1/16 in to 5/8 in, and a weight of 7.7 oz. It has an LED display for battery status and maintenance reminders, and Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty.
The maintenance reminder earns its place on a list about noise, because a blade that goes unoiled is a common reason a clipper gets louder over time. Andis lists it at $79.99.
Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 27, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, up to 2 hours of runtime, titanium-coated stainless-steel blades, 10 guide combs from 1/16 in to 1 in plus blending and left and right taper combs, and a weight of 8.3 oz. Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty.

Wirecutter's upgrade pick, with a brushless motor and up to 3 hours per charge.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
Motor Type Decides Most of the Noise
The motor is the single biggest factor in how loud a clipper sounds. There are three common designs. Magnetic motors drive the blade with an electromagnet that pulls a lever back and forth, and they produce the sharp buzz most people picture when they think of clippers. Rotary motors spin, and a cam turns that spin into the blade's side to side motion, which gives a lower hum. Brushless motors are a newer kind of rotary motor that drops the carbon brushes, one source of friction, heat and wear.
If noise matters to you, look for rotary or brushless in the spec list. Magnetic machines can be excellent cutters, but they are rarely the quiet option.

Speed and Load
Any motor gets louder as it runs faster and as it works harder. A clipper pushing through thick, dry hair at its top speed will always sound harsher than the same clipper gliding through short hair on a lower setting. A machine with two speeds lets you keep the lower one for most of the cut and save the higher one for dense patches.

Weight and Housing
A light plastic body can rattle along with the motor, and a heavier, tighter body tends to hold it still. Weight is not a noise rating, but it is one of the few related figures makers do publish, so it is shown for every pick where the maker lists it. Lighter machines are also easier on the wrist during a long session.

Blade Upkeep
A dry or clogged blade is a common cause of a clipper that suddenly got louder. Friction between the blades makes the motor work harder and adds a grinding note on top of the hum. Whatever you buy, check that replacement blades and oil are easy to find for it.

Do You Also Need a Trimmer?
A clipper removes length. A trimmer has a narrower blade for the neckline, sideburns and around the ears, which is exactly where noise is closest to the ear. If you want clean edges at home, you need both, which is why some kits pair them.

How We Chose
We did not run our own sound test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. We found no decibel figure on the makers' product pages we used, so a list that ranked them by noise would be guessing.
Instead we started from the machines four clipper guides recommend, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, added two home clippers from Andis whose maker lists their motor type, and kept the ones built on the motor designs associated with lower noise: rotary and brushless. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so.
NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published September 2026. Other brands' specs were read between September 25 and 28, 2026 and their list prices on September 28, 2026, as shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Remington Virtually Indestructible Haircut and Beard Trimmer. Wirecutter's pick as the best clipper for cutting your own or a kid's hair.
- Wahl Cordless Color Pro. Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards. Left off this list only because we could not confirm its motor type on Wahl's product page.
- Andis Master Cordless. Men's Health's best professional clipper, with a rotary motor, but it ships with no guide combs, so it suits experienced cutters rather than a calm first haircut.
Which Quiet Clipper Should You Buy?
Cutting your own hair, edges included, on the lower speed most of the time: the NOVAH set, our top pick.
Fades and blends from a rotary barber clipper: the Wahl Magic Clip.
A light machine: the Andis enVISION at 7.7 oz.
Lowest spend on a rotary motor: the Andis inCRED at $59.99.
Brushless and all-metal, price no object: the BaBylissPRO SilverFX+.

How Do You Make Any Clipper Quieter?
Most of the noise you can change is in the blade, not the motor. Four habits make the biggest difference.
Oil the blade every cut. Put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds and wipe off the excess. A dry blade adds a grinding edge to the sound.
Brush out the hair. Packed hair between the blades makes the motor labour.
Check the blade screws. A loose blade rattles against the housing. Tighten the screws gently, never so hard that the blade cannot move.
Use the lower speed. Save the higher speed for thick, dense patches, and let the clipper do the work rather than pushing it through the hair.
Why Are Quiet Clippers Popular for Kids?
The buzz close to the ear is what unsettles many children, and some adults with sensory sensitivity, more than the haircut itself. A lower hum helps, and so does the approach: hold the clipper yourself and let them see and hear it running from a safe distance first, start at the back of the head rather than next to the ear, and use the longest guard that gives the length you want, since the blade then sits further from the skin.
A cordless machine also helps here, because there is no cord to snag as a child moves. Whatever clipper you use, short sessions with breaks usually go better than one long one.

What is the quietest type of hair clipper?
Rotary and brushless clippers are generally the quiet options. Magnetic motor clippers produce the sharper buzz most people associate with clippers. Within any design, a lower speed and a clean, oiled blade make the biggest difference to how loud it sounds.
Are brushless clippers quieter?
A brushless motor is a rotary design without carbon brushes, which removes one source of friction and wear. Makers rarely publish decibel figures, so there is no fair way to rank specific models by noise, but brushless machines belong in the quieter group of designs.
Why are my clippers so loud all of a sudden?
Usually the blade. A dry blade, hair packed between the teeth or a loose blade screw all make a clipper louder. Brush it out, oil it with 3 drops across the teeth and check the screws before assuming the motor is failing.
Are cordless clippers quieter than corded ones?
Not because of the cord. Noise comes from the motor design, the speed and the blade condition. Cordless machines are easier to use around a child who moves, but a corded rotary clipper can be just as calm.
Do quiet clippers cut as well?
Yes. Rotary and brushless motors are used in professional barber clippers. What matters for cut quality is a sharp, aligned blade and enough power for your hair type, and a two-speed clipper lets you add power only when the hair calls for it.
How do you cut a child's hair if they are scared of the clippers?
Hold the clipper yourself and let them see and hear it running from a safe distance first, start at the back of the head, use the longest guard that works, and keep sessions short. A clipper with a lower hum and a lower speed setting helps, but the approach matters as much as the machine.
