OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set for beginners
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm
The best clippers for beginners are the ones that make a mistake hard to make: a full set of clearly labelled guards, a taper lever for blending, a weight you can hold at awkward angles, and a trimmer for the edges. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer. We make it, so read its entry with that in mind. It is our pick because a first-timer needs two tools, a clipper for the length and a trimmer for the neckline and around the ears, and this box has both, each running 5+ hours on standard speed.
If you want a single clipper, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro is Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards at a $78.99 list price. The Andis inCRED kit is the lowest-cost starter, listed at $59.99. The Andis enVISION, at 7.7 oz, suits beginners cutting their own hair.
Below: what a beginner actually needs, all seven picks with who should skip each, a spec table, where the big guides agree, and the clippers to avoid as a first machine.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set for beginners: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A brushless clipper and a detail trimmer, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.
Best for
- Beginners who want to do the whole haircut, edges included, without buying a second tool later
Skip it if
- You only plan to buzz one length and never touch the edges; a single clipper is enough
- You want a corded machine that never needs charging
- You want the lowest possible spend while you find out whether home haircuts suit you
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for beginners because a first-timer's two hardest jobs are an even length and clean edges, and this box has a separate tool for each. The clipper takes the bulk of the cut. The trimmer does the neckline, the sideburns and around the ears.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing, with a taper lever for blending between guard lengths. A brushless motor has no carbon brushes rubbing inside it, so less of the battery is lost to friction and heat. Both tools run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge. Turbo uses more.
Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. The honest tradeoff for a beginner: if you are not sure you will keep cutting at home, a cheaper single clipper is a lower-risk way to find out. The Andis inCRED kit below is the one to look at if that is you.
Check price on AmazonLongest bar = longest published runtime. Makers' own figures, not our tests; corded models and runtimes we could not confirm are left out. NOVAH's is our own figure for standard speed.
#2
Best single clipper to learn on: Wahl Cordless Color Pro Lithium-Ion Hair Clipper
Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in.
Best for
- Complete first-timers: matching a guard color to a length removes the guesswork
- Cutting several people, where each person's lengths can be remembered as colors
- A cordless clipper with a taper lever at a low list price
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You expect to move on to barber-style fades soon
Forbes Vetted named the Cordless Color Pro its best value hair clipper. Wahl lists it at $78.99, with up to 2 hours of runtime, self-sharpening blades, a taper lever and 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in. Wahl says a 15-minute quick charge gives 5 minutes of use, enough to finish a cut if the battery runs low.
The color coding is why it earns this label. A beginner reading a tiny number on a plastic guard in a steamy bathroom mirror is exactly how the wrong guard ends up on the clipper. Remembering that the sides are always one color and the top another is simpler, and it is simpler still when you cut more than one person. It is a clipper only, so clean edges need a separate trimmer.

#3
Best low-cost starter kit: Andis inCRED Lithium-Ion Cordless Clipper Kit
An 18-piece cord/cordless home kit, listed at $59.99.
Best for
- Finding out whether home haircuts suit you for the lowest list price on this list
- Beginners who want extra blending and taper combs from day one
- Cord/cordless use, so a flat battery never ends a first cut
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want a longer runtime; Andis lists up to 2 hours
Andis lists the inCRED kit at $59.99, and for a beginner it is a lot of kit for the money. It runs corded or cordless, with a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, and Andis lists up to 2 hours of runtime; it weighs 8.3 oz. The box carries 10 guide combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, plus blending and left and right taper combs, with titanium-coated stainless-steel blades. Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty.
The extra combs are the point for a beginner. A blending comb and taper combs for around the ears are the tools that help a first-timer get the awkward areas even. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs and its price. Our under-$100 guide covers it alongside the other budget options.

#4
Best for beginners cutting their own hair: Andis enVISION Cordless Clipper
A 7.7 oz cordless clipper with a runtime of up to 3 hours and 12 attachment combs.
Best for
- Cutting your own hair, where a lighter clipper is easier to hold behind your head
- Beginners who forget maintenance: the LED display shows battery status and maintenance reminders
- A full comb set from 1/16 in to 5/8 in
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You want a corded machine
Andis lists the enVISION with a rotary motor at 7,000 strokes per minute, a runtime of up to 3 hours, a titanium-ceramic blade that adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm, and 12 attachment combs from 1/16 in to 5/8 in. It weighs 7.7 oz, the lightest weight published by any maker on this list, and Andis backs it with a 5 year warranty at a $79.99 list price.
Weight matters more to a beginner than to anyone else, because a beginner goes slowly. Cutting your own hair means holding the clipper overhead and behind you for a long time, and a lighter machine keeps the hand steadier. The LED maintenance reminder is a small thing that helps a new owner build the oiling habit. None of the four big guides named it as a pick, so it is here on its published specs.

#5
Best corded starter kit: Wahl Elite Pro Corded High Performance Hair Clipper Kit
Wirecutter's top pick in its guide to hair clippers for home use, listed at $69.99.
Best for
- Beginners who never want to think about charging
- A well-reviewed, complete corded kit at a low list price
Skip it if
- You want to cut your own hair without a cord in the way
Wirecutter's guide is written for people cutting hair at home, and the Elite Pro is its top pick. Wahl lists it at $69.99. It is corded, with self-sharpening blades, and Wirecutter reports 10 guide combs in the kit.
For a beginner, a cord removes one thing to worry about: the clipper will never slow down halfway through a slow first cut. The trade is reach, which matters most when cutting your own hair. If you will mostly cut someone else sitting in a chair near an outlet, that is no hardship, and the money saved can go toward a trimmer. Wahl's own page lists fewer specs than the others here, which is why several cells in the table below read not listed.
Also named by Wirecutter (The New York Times): Top pick, the best home hair clipper. Guards from Wirecutter (page updated Mar 28, 2025); other specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#6
Best for beginners who want to learn fades: Andis reVITE Cordless Clipper
Forbes Vetted's best overall, shipping with 12 metal-clip combs.
Best for
- Beginners who already plan to learn fades and want a fade blade from the start
- A full guard set, so no extra guards need buying
- A 2 hour runtime, enough for a slow cut and then some
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
- You are not sure yet whether home haircuts will stick
Forbes Vetted named the reVITE its best hair clipper overall. Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, a 2 hour runtime, an adjustable stainless-steel fade blade and 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, at 11.5 oz. Andis lists it at $149.99.
It is the step-up pick for a beginner with ambitions. Some clippers built for fading ship with few guards or none, because barbers already own them. The reVITE pairs a fade blade with a full, metal-clip comb set, so a beginner can learn blending without buying extras. It costs more than the other single clippers here, so it suits someone confident that they will keep cutting. It is a clipper only.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers overall. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

Premium pick: the clipper to grow into: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Magic Clip
Named best overall by The Strategist and most versatile by Men's Health.
Best for
- Beginners who have a few cuts behind them and want a barber-shop fading clipper
- Blending, with its stagger-tooth blade
- Cord/cordless use, so a flat battery never ends a cut
Skip it if
- You want a full guard set: Wahl lists 8 guides
- You want a trimmer for the edges in the same box
Two of the four big guides put the Magic Clip at or near the top: The Strategist named it best overall and Men's Health most versatile. Wahl lists a rotary motor, a 100 minute runtime from a 60 minute charge and 8 guides in the box, at 10.2 oz, and it runs with or without the cord. Wahl lists it at $144.99.
It is on a beginners list for honesty's sake, because it is one of the most searched clippers in Google Trends. It is a superb fading clipper and a demanding first one. Buy it once you can already blend, not to learn to blend. Our Magic Clip alternatives guide covers the machines people compare it with.
Also named by The Strategist (New York Magazine): Best hair clipper overall; Men's Health: Most versatile hair clippers. Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
What Makes a Clipper Good for a Beginner?
A beginner's clipper is judged on how forgiving it is, not how fast it is. An experienced barber can make almost any clipper work. A first-timer needs the machine to do some of the protecting: guards that stop the blade cutting shorter than intended, a lever that softens the step between two lengths, and a body light enough that the hand stays steady.
Motor speed matters less than spec sheets suggest, and makers do not all measure it the same way. What ruins first haircuts is almost never a slow motor. It is a guard that was not seated, a first pass that was too short, or an edge that a wide clipper blade could not reach cleanly.

Guards: The Most Important Feature for a Beginner
Guards are what turn a sharp blade into a tool that cannot cut shorter than you meant to. For a first clipper, look for a run from 1/16 in to at least 1/2 in, labels you can read mid-cut, and a firm clip. A guard that flexes leaves uneven patches, and a guard that pops off mid-pass is how a first haircut ends with a bald spot.
This is the single biggest trap in the market. Several of the most praised professional clippers ship with very few guards, or none at all, because barbers already own them. They are excellent machines and poor first purchases.

Taper Lever
The taper lever on the side of the clipper opens and closes the blade by a fraction of a millimetre. Closed, it cuts at the guard's length. Open, it leaves the hair slightly longer. For a beginner, that small range is the difference between a visible line where a #2 meets a #3 and a smooth blend.
Check each pick's blade entry for a taper lever or an adjustable blade.

Weight and Cordless Freedom
Beginners hold the clipper longer than barbers do, because they go slowly, and a few extra ounces start to show in the wrist, especially when cutting your own hair with your arm raised behind your head.
Cordless helps for the same reason: no cord catching on the sink or a shoulder. Check the published runtime, and favour anything above about 60 minutes so the battery never slows the blade halfway through. Corded is still a fine choice if you always cut in the same spot.

Do Beginners Need a Trimmer Too?
A clipper removes length. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for the neckline, the sideburns and around the ears. Those edges are what make a first haircut look finished rather than home-made, and they are exactly where a wide clipper blade struggles.
If you only plan to buzz one length all over and let a barber tidy the edges, skip the trimmer for now. If you want to do the whole cut yourself, you need both tools, which is why our top pick is a set.

How We Chose
We did not run our own lab test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.
We read four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, and listed the machines they name as picks. For a beginners list we favoured the ones with a fuller guard set and the ones people actually search for, using Google Trends, and kept mostly to a similar price range to ours, with one premium option to grow into. We added two home machines from Andis's current range that none of the guides covered but that suit a first-timer. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown in each entry, except where an entry names a guide as the source. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in. List prices change and retailers often sell below them, so check the price on the day you buy.
NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published September 2026. Specs and list prices read on each maker's website on the dates shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Andis Master Cordless Clipper. Named best professional clipper by Men's Health and a luxury pick by Forbes Vetted, and a genuine barber's tool. It is left off this list because Andis sells it with no guide combs, only a blade guard, which makes it a poor first clipper.
- Wahl Professional 5 Star Series Senior. Men's Health's best overall pick. Wahl lists 3 guides, from 1/16 in to 3/16 in, too short a range for most beginners.
- Remington Virtually Indestructible Haircut and Beard Trimmer. Wirecutter's pick as the best clipper for cutting your own or a kid's hair.
- BaBylissPRO SilverFX+. Wirecutter's upgrade pick, an all-metal brushless cord/cordless clipper. BaBylissPRO lists it with 6 combs at $249.99 (checked September 28, 2026).
Which Beginner Clipper Should You Buy?
You want to do the whole haircut yourself, edges included: the NOVAH set, our top pick.
You have never cut hair before and want the easiest start: the Wahl Cordless Color Pro, for its color-coded guards.
You want to try home haircuts for the least money: the Andis inCRED kit.
You mostly cut your own hair: the Andis enVISION, at 7.7 oz.
You never want to charge anything: the corded Wahl Elite Pro.
You already know you want to learn fades: the Andis reVITE.
You have a few cuts behind you and want a barber-shop clipper: the Wahl Magic Clip.

What Mistakes Do Beginners Make With Their First Clippers?
Five common mistakes spoil first haircuts, and none of them is the clipper's fault.
Starting too short. If you want a #2, make the first pass with a #3. You can always go shorter on a second pass. You cannot put hair back.
A guard that is not seated. Press it on until it clicks, then look at it, before every pass. A half-seated guard is a common cause of a bald patch.
Cutting wet hair. Wet hair clumps and hides its true length. Clippers cut dry, clean, combed hair far more evenly.
Long, dragging strokes. Work against the grain in short strokes of 2 to 3 inches, flicking outward at the end of each so the guard does not dig into the head.
Doing the edges with the clipper. A clipper blade is too wide for the neckline and around the ears. Do the length first, then switch to a trimmer for the edges. Our step-by-step guide to cutting your own hair covers each stage.

How Much Should a Beginner Spend on Clippers?
Less than you might think, and more than the cheapest option. The single clippers on this list run from $59.99 to $149.99 at list price (checked September 28, 2026). Below that range, check the guard set first, since the guards are the part a beginner relies on most.
A fair rule: if you only want to try a home buzz cut, spend at the low end. If you already know you want to do the whole haircut, edges included, budget for a clipper and a trimmer, either as a set or as two purchases. Paying for a professional clipper with no guards is the one way to spend more and get a harder first cut.
How Should a Beginner Look After New Clippers?
Brush the hair out of the blade after every cut. Put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds, and wipe off the excess. Store it dry, with the blade guard on.
A dry blade runs hot and pulls hair, and new owners often mistake that for a weak motor. Before blaming the motor for a clipper that drags, clean and oil the blade, whichever brand you buy. Wash the guards in warm soapy water every few cuts and let them dry fully. For a cordless machine, top up the charge after each use rather than leaving the battery flat for weeks.

What are the best clippers for beginners?
For a clipper and trimmer in one box, our pick is the NOVAH set (we make it). For a single clipper that is easy to learn on, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro, for its color-coded guards. For the lowest cost, the Andis inCRED kit. For cutting your own hair, the Andis enVISION.
Are professional clippers good for beginners?
Usually not as a first machine. Many professional clippers ship with very few guards, or none, because barbers already own them. A beginner is better served by a clipper with a full guard set and a taper lever, then a professional machine once blending comes naturally.
What guard should a beginner start with?
One size longer than the length you want. If you want a #2 on the sides, make the first pass with a #3, check it in good light, then go down a size if needed. Going shorter is easy; going longer is not possible.
Do beginners need a trimmer as well as clippers?
Only if you want clean edges. A clipper handles the length; a trimmer's narrower blade handles the neckline, sideburns and around the ears. If you only buzz one length and let a barber tidy the edges, a clipper alone is enough to start.
