OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set for thick hair
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm
For thick hair, our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer, a brushless clipper with a 6,500 RPM turbo setting plus a trimmer for the edges. We make it, so read its entry with that in mind.
If you want one clipper and nothing else, the Andis enVISION pairs a rotary motor with a long published runtime at $79.99, and the Wahl Magic Clip is the rotary fading clipper two of the big guides put at or near the top. For longer lengths on top, the Andis reVITE ships with combs up to 1 in. Experienced cutters taking off serious bulk should look at the Wahl Senior or the brushless BaBylissPRO SilverFX+.
Below: all seven picks with who each suits and who should skip it, a table comparing every spec, where Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health agree, and what actually matters when the hair is dense.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set for thick hair: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A brushless clipper with a 6,500 RPM turbo setting and a detail trimmer.
Best for
- Thick hair cut at home, with a standard and a turbo speed on the clipper
- Keeping edges clean between cuts, with the trimmer in the same box
- One purchase that covers the bulk, the fade and the lineup
Skip it if
- You keep more than 1/2 in on top and want a guard for it: the longest clipper guard in the set is 1/2 in
- You want a corded machine that never needs charging
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for thick hair because it pairs a brushless clipper with two speeds and a trimmer for the edges.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM. A brushless motor has no carbon brushes, so there is less internal friction. It sits in an all-metal housing with a taper lever for blending. Both the clipper and the trimmer run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge; turbo uses the battery faster.
The honest limit is guard length. The six clipper guards run from 1.5 mm to 13 mm (1/2 in), which covers fades, tapers and short cuts. If you keep your top longer than that, you will need scissors, clipper over comb, or a separate longer guard.
Check today's price for both tools on Amazon.

#2
Best budget clipper for thick hair: Andis enVISION Cordless Clipper
A rotary motor, up to 3 hours per charge and 12 combs, at $79.99 list.
Best for
- A rotary motor at a low list price
- Long cordless sessions: Andis lists up to 3 hours
- Knowing when to charge, with its LED battery display
Skip it if
- You want a pick one of the big guides has named: none of the four lists it
- You want a trimmer for edges in the same box
Andis lists the enVISION with a rotary motor at 7,000 strokes per minute, up to 3 hours of runtime and 12 attachment combs from 1/16 in to 5/8 in. It weighs 7.7 oz.
The rotary motor is the reason it is here. That design is built around torque, which is what thick hair asks for. The titanium-ceramic blade adjusts from 1 to 1.9 mm, and an LED display shows battery status and maintenance reminders, which helps on a long cut where a fading battery would otherwise slow the blade without warning.
It is not one of the machines Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted or Men's Health picked, so you are relying on the maker's specs rather than a guide's verdict. It is a clipper only, with no trimmer. Andis lists it at $79.99.
Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 27, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#3
Best for fading thick hair: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Magic Clip
A rotary fading clipper with a stagger-tooth blade, named best overall by The Strategist.
Best for
- Fades and blends on dense hair, where every step between lengths shows
- Running on the cord when the battery gets low
Skip it if
- You want a trimmer for lineups in the same box
The Strategist named the Magic Clip its best hair clipper overall and Men's Health called it the most versatile. Wahl lists a rotary motor, a 100 minute runtime from a 60 minute charge, 8 guides and a weight of 10.2 oz, and it runs cord or cordless.
The stagger-tooth blade is what makes it a fading tool. Its teeth are offset so the line between two lengths diffuses rather than steps, and on thick hair, where a hard line is easy to see, that matters. Being able to plug in mid-cut is a real advantage on a dense head that takes longer than usual.
It is a professional machine and cuts like one, which is more than a first-time home cutter needs. There is no trimmer in the box. Wahl lists it at $144.99.
Also named by The Strategist (New York Magazine): Best hair clipper overall; Men's Health: Most versatile hair clippers. Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#4
Best for longer lengths on thick hair: Andis reVITE Cordless Clipper
Forbes Vetted's best overall, with 12 combs that go up to 1 in.
Best for
- Keeping real length on top: the combs run from 1/16 in to 1 in
- A full guard set in the box
- Fading with the adjustable stainless-steel blade
Skip it if
- You only cut short and will never use the longer combs
- You want a trimmer for edges in the same box
Forbes Vetted named the reVITE its best hair clipper overall. Andis lists a rotary motor at 5,500 strokes per minute, 2 hours of runtime, 12 combs from 1/16 in to 1 in, an adjustable stainless-steel fade blade and a weight of 11.5 oz.
The comb range is the reason it suits thick hair that is worn longer. Several sets on this list stop at 1/2 in or 5/8 in, and a 1 in comb lets you take dense hair down evenly on top without switching to scissors. Andis's combs have metal clips.
If you cut short and fade tight, much of that comb set will sit in the drawer. There is no trimmer included. Andis lists it at $149.99.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers overall. Specs from andis.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#5
Best budget cordless for first-timers: Wahl Cordless Color Pro Lithium-Ion Hair Clipper
Forbes Vetted's value pick, with 12 color-coded guards up to 1 in.
Best for
- First home haircuts: guard colors make lengths easy to keep straight
- Longer cuts on top, with guards up to 1 in
- A taper lever at a low list price
Skip it if
- You want to choose by motor type: we could not find one on Wahl's page
- You want a professional barber machine rather than a home clipper
Forbes Vetted made the Color Pro its value pick. Wahl lists 12 color-coded guards from 1/16 in to 1 in, up to 2 hours of runtime, self-sharpening blades and a taper lever. A 15-minute quick charge gives 5 minutes of use for a touch-up.
On thick hair the color coding earns its place in a different way: dense hair usually needs a guard change or two on the way down, and matching a color is easier to keep straight mid-cut than reading a number. The 1 in guard also covers a longer top.
We could not find the motor type on Wahl's page, and it is the spec that matters most for dense hair, so the table below shows it as not listed. If motor type matters to you, pick one of the machines whose maker lists it. Wahl lists it at $78.99.
Also named by Forbes Vetted: Best value hair clippers. Specs from wahlusa.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#6
Premium pick for heavy bulk removal: Wahl Professional 5 Star Cord/Cordless Senior
Men's Health's best overall: a rotary professional clipper for experienced hands.
Best for
- Taking a lot of thick hair down fast, with a rotary motor
- Experienced cutters who work mostly short
- Running on the cord as well as off it
Skip it if
- You need a full guard set: Wahl includes 3 guides, 1/16 in to 3/16 in
- You cut several heads in one sitting: Wahl lists 80 minutes of runtime
Men's Health named the 5 Star Senior its best hair clipper overall. Wahl lists 3 guides from 1/16 in to 3/16 in, a rotary motor, an adjustable 2191 blade and 80 minutes of runtime. It runs cord or cordless.
This is a machine for removing bulk. The short guard set tells you who it is built for: barbers and experienced home cutters who take thick hair short and use their own guards or clipper over comb for anything longer.
For a beginner, 3 short guides, 1/16 in to 3/16 in, may not cover a full haircut, so check before you buy. Wahl lists it at $184.99.
Also named by Men's Health: Best overall hair clippers (5 Star Series Senior). Specs from wahlpro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

#7
Premium brushless pick: BaBylissPRO SilverFX+ All-Metal Lithium Clipper
Wirecutter's upgrade pick: brushless, all-metal and up to 3 hours per charge.
Best for
- Long sessions on dense hair, with up to 3 hours per charge
- A brushless motor in an all-metal body
- USB-C charging and cord or cordless use
Skip it if
- Budget matters: at $249.99 it has the highest list price here
- You want a big guard set: it ships with 6 combs
Wirecutter chose the SilverFX+ as its upgrade pick. BaBylissPRO lists a brushless motor at 6,800 RPM, up to 3 hours of runtime, USB-C charging, a zero-gap adjustable stainless-steel taper blade and 6 combs, in an all-metal body.
For thick hair, the appeal is a brushless motor with up to 3 hours of listed runtime, enough for a long cut or a household of cuts, and it runs on the cord if you need it. The zero-gap blade gets close for tight fades, which takes practice.
The trade-offs are price and a smaller guard set than the home kits. BaBylissPRO lists it at $249.99.
Also named by Wirecutter (The New York Times): Upgrade pick; Men's Health: Best designed hair clippers (SilverFX). Specs from babylisspro.com, checked Sep 25, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
Motor Type Under Load
Thick hair is a load test. Every pass pushes more hair into the blade, and a motor that cannot hold its speed slows down, which is when a clipper starts to pull instead of cut. Rotary motors are the traditional choice for dense hair because they are built around torque rather than raw speed. Brushless motors are the newer design: less internal friction and heat, so more of the battery goes into keeping the blade moving. Magnetic motors run fast and light and suit fine or short hair better than heavy bulk.
Makers quote speed in different units, some in RPM and some in strokes per minute, so a bigger number on one brand's page does not translate directly to another's. Use the figures to compare models inside one brand, and use motor type to compare across brands.

A Sharp, Clean, Oiled Blade
No motor rescues a dull or dry blade. On thick hair, a blade with hair packed between the teeth or no oil on the rails runs hot and snags within a few minutes. Look for a steel blade you can remove to clean, and budget for replacement blades over the life of the machine.
A taper lever matters more on thick hair than on fine hair, because dense hair shows every step between two lengths. Opening and closing the blade a little lets you soften a line without switching guards.

Guards That Hold Their Shape
Thick hair pushes back against the guard. A thin guard can flex on a long setting and leave the hair longer in one patch than the next. Firm guards that clip on tightly give an even result.
Also check the longest guard in the box. If you keep 3/4 in or 1 in on top, a set that stops at 1/2 in will not cover it, and you will be cutting the top with scissors or clipper over comb.

Runtime, Because Thick Hair Takes Longer
A thick head takes more passes, and a cordless clipper that is running low tends to lose speed before it stops. That slowdown is exactly when it starts to pull. A long published runtime gives you margin, and a machine that runs on the cord as well is a useful backup.
Check whether the maker quotes runtime at standard speed or at its highest setting. A turbo or high-speed setting uses the battery faster.

Do You Need a Trimmer Too?
Edges grow out between cuts, and a clipper blade is too wide for clean edges. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for the hairline, sideburns and nape. If you only buzz to one length and let the edges go, skip it. If you want the cut to look finished between barber visits, you need both.

How We Chose
We did not run our own lab test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.
We read four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health, and listed the machines they name. For thick hair we then favored the published specs that matter under load: motor type first, then blade, runtime and guard range. We left out the all-in-one groomers, because this list covers dedicated hair clippers. We added one machine the guides do not name, the Andis enVISION, because it pairs a rotary motor with a long runtime at a low list price, and we say so in its entry.
Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in. NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published September 2026. Other brands' specs were read between September 25 and 27, 2026 and their list prices on September 28, 2026, as shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Andis Master Cordless. Men's Health's best professional clipper and Forbes Vetted's luxury pick, a rotary machine for experienced cutters. It ships with no guide combs, so a home cutter would need to buy them first.
- BaBylissPRO LithiumFX. An ergonomic cord/cordless barber clipper from the same maker as the SilverFX+, at a lower list price, not named by the four guides.
- Philips Norelco All-in-One Series 9000. Forbes Vetted's pick for fades. It is an all-in-one face, head and body trimmer kit rather than a dedicated hair clipper, which is why it is not on this list.
Which Clipper Should You Buy for Thick Hair?
Cutting thick hair at home, edges included: a clipper and a trimmer, which is the NOVAH set, our top pick.
One clipper, lowest spend, rotary motor: the Andis enVISION.
Fading dense hair with some experience: the Wahl Magic Clip.
Thick hair worn longer on top: the Andis reVITE or, for a first-timer on a budget, the Wahl Cordless Color Pro, both with guards up to 1 in.
Experienced, cutting short, taking off serious bulk: the Wahl Senior, or the BaBylissPRO SilverFX+ if you want brushless and a long runtime.

How Do You Cut Thick Hair With Clippers Without Pulling?
Pulling on thick hair often comes from asking the blade to take too much at once. Four habits fix most of it.
Start long and work down. Take the whole head down with a longer guard first, then switch to your working length. Two passes at two lengths are faster than fighting one short guard through 2 in of dense hair.
Cut against the grain, slowly. Move the clipper upward against the direction of growth at a steady pace. Rushing packs hair into the teeth faster than the blade can cut it.
Clear the blade mid-cut. On a thick head, stop once or twice to brush out the blade. Packed hair is a common reason a good clipper suddenly starts to snag.
Use the higher speed where the hair is densest. If your clipper has a turbo or high setting, use it on the crown and the back, then return to standard speed to save battery.

How Often Should You Oil a Clipper Used on Thick Hair?
Every cut, and once more during a long one. Thick hair means more friction on the blade, and friction is heat. Brush the hair out, put 3 drops of clipper oil on the teeth, one at each corner and one in the middle, run it for a few seconds, and wipe off the excess.
A dry blade runs hot and pulls long before the motor is the problem. If a clipper that used to cut well starts to snag, clean and oil the blade before you blame the motor, and replace the blade if cleaning does not bring it back.

What clippers do barbers prefer for thick hair?
Look at professional rotary or brushless clippers from Wahl, Andis or BaBylissPRO, plus a separate trimmer for the edges. On this list, the Wahl Magic Clip and Wahl Senior are rotary barber-shop machines, and the BaBylissPRO SilverFX+ is brushless. Our pick, the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer, pairs a brushless clipper with a trimmer in one set.
Which brand of hair clipper is best for thick hair?
No single brand wins. Motor type matters more than the badge: rotary and brushless motors hold their speed better under a heavy load than magnetic ones. Wahl, Andis and BaBylissPRO all make rotary or brushless machines, and the right one depends on your budget, how long you keep your hair and whether you also want a trimmer.
Why do my clippers pull on thick hair?
Usually a dry or packed blade, a low battery, or too much hair per pass. Brush out and oil the blade, charge the clipper fully, and take the length down in two stages with a longer guard first. If it still pulls after that, the blade is likely dull and needs replacing.
Is a rotary or brushless motor better for thick hair?
Both suit thick hair. Rotary motors are the traditional choice for dense hair because they are built for torque. Brushless motors are newer, with less friction and heat, so more of the battery goes into keeping the blade moving. Magnetic motors are lighter and better suited to fine or short hair.
