OUR TOP PICKBest clipper + trimmer set
- A cordless clipper and a detail trimmer in one set
- 5+ hours per charge on standard speed, both tools
- Brushless clipper motor: 6,000 RPM standard, 6,500 RPM turbo
- 6 clipper guards, 1.5 to 13 mm

The best trimmer for lineups is a narrow, cordless trimmer with a sharp blade you can see, and the best way to get one is often inside a set. Our top pick is the NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer. We make it, so read its entry with that in mind. It is our pick because the trimmer comes with a brushless clipper in the same box, each running 5+ hours on standard speed.
If you want a trimmer on its own, the Andis Talon Trimmer, which Andis describes as designed for lineups, edges and necklines, lists at $119.99, and the Andis GTX-EXO II, a professional barber trimmer with a brushless motor and an open blade, lists at $199.99 (both checked October 2, 2026). On a smaller budget, the Wahl Lithium Pro kit lists at $69.99 and the Andis inCRED Cordless Combo at $79.99 (both checked September 28, 2026).
Below: what to look for in a lineup trimmer, all seven picks with who each one suits and who should skip it, and one table comparing every spec.

OUR TOP PICK
Best clipper + trimmer set: NOVAH Pro Clipper + Trimmer
A brushless clipper and a detail trimmer, 5+ hours per charge on standard speed.
Best for
- Cutting your own hair: the clipper takes the length, the trimmer draws the hairline and cleans the neckline
- One purchase that covers the whole haircut and the lineup
- A trimmer that can be zero-gapped for a harder line, with a battery display
Skip it if
- You already own a clipper you like and only want a dedicated barber trimmer on its own
- You want a corded machine that never needs charging
We make this set, so weigh that as you read. It is our top pick for lineups for one reason the single trimmers here do not share: you get the clipper too. A lineup looks wrong against a rough outline, and the clipper is what makes the outline even before the trimmer draws the line.
The clipper runs a brushless motor at 6,000 RPM, with a turbo setting at 6,500 RPM, inside an all-metal housing, with a taper lever for blending between guard lengths. A brushless motor, in general, has no carbon brushes rubbing on the commutator, so there are no brushes to wear out. Both the clipper and the trimmer run 5+ hours on standard speed per charge; turbo uses more battery.
Check today's price for both tools on Amazon. The honest limitation: if you only want a trimmer and already own a clipper, you are paying for a tool you do not need.
Check price on AmazonLongest bar = longest published runtime. Makers' own figures, not our tests; corded models and runtimes we could not confirm are left out. NOVAH's is our own figure for standard speed.
#2
Best cordless lineup trimmer: Andis Talon Trimmer
Andis describes it as designed for lineups, edges, beard shaping, necklines and cleanup work.
Best for
- A dedicated trimmer for lineups and necklines with two speeds
- A published runtime of up to 3 hours and USB-C charging
- A spare blade in the box
Skip it if
- You also need a clipper: this is a trimmer only
- Budget matters: Andis lists it at $119.99 for a trimmer alone
This is the most direct answer to the question in the title. Andis lists a cordless rotary trimmer with a 2-speed motor at 7,000 or 9,000 strokes per minute, a published runtime of up to 3 hours, USB-C charging, and a deep-tooth DLC blade, with one extra blade included. It weighs 6.9 oz and comes with 4 combs from 1/16 in to 3/8 in, and Andis backs it with a 2 year warranty.
Andis lists it at $119.99. It does not replace a clipper, so the length still needs a second tool.
Specs from andis.com, checked Oct 2, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#3
Best premium barber trimmer: Andis GTX-EXO II Gold Trimmer
A brushless barber trimmer with an open blade for seeing the line.
Best for
- Barbers and experienced cutters who draw lines all day
- A brushless motor at 7,200 strokes per minute
- An open-blade design that keeps the line in view
Skip it if
- Budget matters: at $199.99 it lists highest of the single trimmers here
- You want long runtime: Andis lists up to 90 minutes
Andis lists the GTX-EXO II with a brushless motor at 7,200 strokes per minute, the M-Force GTX-Z deep-tooth blade in an open-blade design, up to 90 minutes of runtime and 4 combs from 1/16 in to 3/8 in. It weighs 7.4 oz and carries a 2 year warranty.
The open blade is the point for lineups: you see the skin edge and the blade meet. It is a professional barber trimmer. Andis lists it at $199.99.
Specs from andis.com, checked Oct 2, 2026. List price re-checked Oct 5, 2026.
#4

- Titanium and DLC-coated blades on both tools
- Trimming guides as well as clipper guides in the box

The clipper has a Stagger-Tooth Crunch blade and the trimmer a T-Wide blade that adjusts to zero-gap, both titanium and DLC-coated. - A home kit with both tools

#6
Best value clipper and trimmer combo: Andis inCRED Cordless Combo
A cordless clipper and trimmer combo with up to 2 hours of runtime.
Best for
- A cordless combo at $79.99 list
- Up to 2 hours of runtime

What to Look For in a Hair Clipper
Blade Width and Visibility
A lineup is a straight line cut at the hairline, so you need to see the blade meet the skin. Narrow, open blades make that easy. A wide blade hides the line you are trying to draw. Look for a blade the maker describes for lineups, edges or detail, and check whether the teeth are deep or fine: deep teeth catch more hair, fine teeth cut closer.

Motor and Speed
A trimmer has little work to do compared with a clipper, so a motor that stays at speed through a few passes is enough. Some trimmers offer two speeds: slower for the neckline, faster for the denser hair above the ears. Makers measure speed differently, so compare it within one brand rather than across brands.

Runtime and Charging
A lineup covers far less hair than a full haircut, so a trimmer's runtime matters less than a clipper's for one person. Longer runtime matters if you cut for a household or hate charging. Check the maker's published figure, and check how it charges: USB-C is easier to live with than a proprietary cable.

Combs and Zero-Gapping
Combs let the same trimmer cut a short length rather than a bare edge. If you only draw lines at the skin, you can skip them. Zero-gapping, setting the trimmer blades almost flush, gives the sharpest line, but it is for experienced hands because it cuts closer and leaves less room for error.

Do You Also Need a Clipper?
A trimmer draws the lines. It does not take length off the top and sides. If you cut your own hair, a clipper does the length and the trimmer does the edges, which is why several picks here are sets.

How We Chose
We did not run our own lab test of these machines, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Here is what we did instead.
We started from four best hair clipper guides, from Wirecutter, The Strategist, Forbes Vetted and Men's Health. They mostly test clippers, so for trimmers we also looked at each maker's own range and chose machines the makers describe for lineups, edges and detail, plus kits that bundle a trimmer. The Philips is the one pick here that a guide named directly. Every spec and list price comes from each maker's own website on the date shown in each entry. Where we could not confirm a figure on the maker's page, the table says so rather than filling it in.
NOVAH's set is on the list because we make it, and it is our top pick. Its entry follows the same template as the others, including who should skip it.
What changed: First published October 2026. Other brands' specs were read between September 25 and October 2, 2026 and their list prices on September 28 or October 2, 2026, as shown in each entry.
Also Worth Knowing About
- Remington Virtually Indestructible Haircut and Beard Trimmer. Wirecutter: The best clipper for cutting your own or a kid's hair.
- Bevel Pro All-in-One Clipper and Trimmer. Forbes Vetted: Best hair clippers for design. Men's Health: Best hair clippers for fades.
Which Trimmer Should You Buy for Lineups?
Cutting your own hair, edges included: a clipper plus a trimmer in one box, which is the NOVAH set, our top pick.
A dedicated trimmer for lineups: the Andis Talon Trimmer, or the Andis GTX-EXO II if you cut hair for a living.
Lowest spend: the Wahl Lithium Pro kit, or the Andis inCRED Combo for a few dollars more.
A pro set: the Wahl Cordless Barber Combo.
Face, head and body in one kit: the Philips All-in-One Series 9000.

Should You Buy a Trimmer Alone or in a Set?
Buy a trimmer alone if you already own a clipper you like, and compare the specific features of each model.
Buy a set if you do not own a clipper, or if your current clipper is old. The edges only look sharp when the cut around them is even, so the two tools work as a pair. The Wahl Lithium Pro kit and the Andis inCRED combo list below both single Andis trimmers and the Wahl Cordless Barber Combo lists above both, at the list prices in each entry. For the NOVAH set, check today's price on Amazon.

How Do You Clean Up a Neckline With a Trimmer?
Start with dry hair and a charged trimmer. Decide on the shape first: a natural neckline follows the curve where the head meets the neck, a squared one cuts a straight horizontal line, and a rounded one cuts a soft arc.
Set the trimmer's blade at the line you want and work from the outside in. Take the stray hair below the line in short upward strokes, stopping at the line. Use a mirror in each hand to check the back, and take less than you think: you can always trim more, but you cannot put hair back. Finish by brushing off the loose hair and checking both sides for an even line.

How Do You Look After a Trimmer?
Brush the hair out of the blade after every use. Put 1 or 2 drops of clipper oil across the teeth, run it for a few seconds, and wipe off the excess. Store it dry, with the blade guard on, and charge it before it is flat.
A dry blade runs hot and pulls hair. Before blaming the motor of a trimmer that drags, clean and oil the blade, whichever brand you buy.

Check price on AmazonFrequently Asked Questions
What is the best trimmer for lineups?
A narrow cordless trimmer with a sharp blade you can see. For a trimmer on its own, the Andis Talon Trimmer, which Andis describes as designed for lineups, edges and necklines. For a clipper and trimmer together, our pick is the NOVAH set (we make it).
What is the difference between trimmers and clippers?
A clipper has a wider blade and a stronger motor for removing length. A trimmer has a narrower, finer blade for lines and edges: the hairline, neckline, sideburns and around the ears. If you want clean edges as well as an even length, you need both.
Can you use a trimmer for a whole haircut?
Not well. A trimmer is too narrow and slow to take length off the sides and back. It draws the lines and cleans the edges after a clipper has done the length.
How much should you spend on a lineup trimmer?
The other brands' picks here list from $69.99 to $289.99 (checked September 28 and October 2, 2026). For home lineups, a kit at the low end of that range is enough. Spend more for a barber trimmer if you draw lines on other people every week.
